    The Batlle of Arnhem in 9 days

    The permanent exhibition of Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ gives a day-by-day account of what happened during the Battle of Arnhem, from the parachute droppings on the heath to the evacuation across the Rhine.

    Photos, texts, objects and audiovisual material help you to discover what the soldiers and citizens experienced in September 1944. After watching an introductory film, you can follow a route through the museum to see and hear the entire story.

    The permanent collection contains diverse top pieces, such as Lieutenant-Colonel John Frost’s hunting horn and the binoculars used by General-Major Roy Urquhart. Historical photos and authentic objects are interspersed with interviews with veterans and civilians who went through one of the most famous battles in World War II.

    At the Kröller-Müller Museum, you will find the world’s finest Vincent van Gogh collection and enjoy masterpieces by modern masters such as Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. The museum is  a treasure trove of De Stijl and futurism, and will surprise you with presentations of contemporary artists.In the sculpture garden, you will stroll past works by Barbara Hepworth, Jean Dubuffet, Marta Pan and others.For architecture enthusiasts we have the museum buildings by Henry van de Velde and Wim Quist, the Gerrit Rietveld pavilion and Aldo van Eyck pavilion in the sculpture garden.

    What is the IJssel Line?

    The IJssel Line in Olst/Welsum was established in the beginning of the 1950s, intended to delay an attack by the Warsaw Pact (Soviet-Union and allies), thereby providing the time needed for NATO partners to provide additional military support, principally from the United States and Great Britain. In Western Europa there was a great fear of the Russians. The Red Army was ten times larger than the NATO forces in Europe and many Soviet divisions were stationed nearby in East Germany and Poland. West Germany borders on East Germany and Poland but as a consequence of World War II was not allowed for a number of years to maintain its own standing army.

    Paleis Het Loo is located in the heart of the Netherlands, on the outskirts of Apeldoorn. In the course of those 300 years, the palace has had a lot of very diverse residents and the building itself underwent many changes. Since 1984, after a thorough restoration, this former royal palace has become a museum and has been open to the public.
